Star Fox 64 Barrel Rolls onto the SEGA Dreamcast

On Dec. 5, yet another Nintendo 64 classic was ported to the SEGA Dreamcast by the seemingly inexhaustible Jnmartin84 and team.

You can find the thorough — albeit taxing — instructions on how to build the Dreamcast-compatible .cdi image from your personal Star Fox 64 rom on the project GitHub .

“Want to play Mario Kart 64 or Star Fox 64 for the Sega Dreamcast, but don’t want to have to go through the hell of setting up a whole GCC toolchain and cross-compiler for SH and building it yourself manually? IF SO, CHRISTMAS HAS COME EARLY FOR YOU!” – Falco Girgis on X

Alternatively — as detailed in the quote above — the Dreamcast community sought to address the requisite coding hurdle that has prevented many from accessing these Nintendo 64 ports. The StarFox 64 Builder for Dreamcast — and the similarly named tools for the Doom 64 and Mario Kart 64 Dreamcast ports — is a much simplified, browser-based process that allows users to import their Nintendo 64 roms and then “autogenerating a CDI or DreamShell ISO” for download.

Faclo Girgis promises that these builders will “[spare] you from ever having to compile a line of code manually!”

Note that this release build of the port reportedly does not work with emulators, nor does Jnmartin84 intend to work towards emulation support.

Jnmartin84 has been on an absolute tear in 2025, adding this Star Fox 64 port to his growing portfolio for which all Dreamcast fans are grateful — check SHIRO! for coverage of his fantastic Doom 64 , Mario Kart 64 , and wipEout efforts.

Utilizing the KallistiOS homebrew Dreamcast SDK , and building off of sonicdcer’s Star Fox 64 decompilation work, the Dreamcast port of Star Fox 64 came to life in early August of this year, before news cycles around Jnmartin84’s then-current project — Mario Kart 64 — had even settled. An alpha build of Dreamcast Star Fox 64 was shared with content creators before August was over.

The Dec. 5 release functions akin to a retail release with great attention to detail. Star Fox 64 on Dreamcast displays in 480p resolution, twice that of the original release, and is free of the infamous blurring effect that was common on N64 titles.

The project GitHub points out that in-game assets were adjusted to reflect the Dreamcast controller set-up. VMU and force-feedback support — boasting an impressive array of compatible rumbling peripherals — are also present.

Jnmartin84 does not directly credit team roles in the Star Fox 64 Dreamcast GitHub, but does acknowledge the following individuals for helping make this port a reality:

  • sonicdreamcaster
  • darc
  • gyrovorbis
  • stiffpeaks
  • mittens
  • pcercuei
  • bbhoodsta
  • gpftroy
  • quzar
  • mrneo240

Functioning as a reimagining of Argonaut Games’s Super FX-powered hit title, Star Fox , this 64-bit outing of the titular star — Fox Mcloud — was developed internally by Nintendo’s Entertainment Analysis & Development division. The project did see some returning faces, as it was directed by Takao Shimizu who had been credited as “Japanese Support” for the Super Nintendo original. Star Fox 64 would release worldwide in 1997 and went on to be the second-best selling Nintendo 64 title of that year, behind Mario Kart 64 .
