Prisoner of Ice #BestOfSaturnPoint and click adventures were all the rage for PC gamers in the ’90s, but they never translated well to home consoles… but no one told Japan, as Saturn gamers enjoyed several such ports over the console’s lifespan. In very late 1997, Call of Cthulhu / H.P. Lovecraft inspired PC title Prisoner of Ice crossed over to Saturn courtesy of Xing. Set in 1937, you are Lt. Ryan aboard the HMS Victoria, tasked to retrieve two mysterious crates from a secret military installation in the Antarctic. The crates turn out to be holding a monster — and this sets off a series of events that see Ryan end up in several locations around the world before the game’s finale. Compatible with the Saturn mouse, players will click to prompt Ryan to walk and inspect / pick up items that can be added to his inventory. Ryan must collect certain objects and initiate certain conversations to advance the story; make a wrong move or sit idly for too long, and it’s game over! The PC’s original English text was injected into the Saturn game by Plissken in May 2023 to complement the already-English voice-overs. Fancy a traditional, scary game to click your way through? Right this way…
