Saroo Takes On Capcom’s Arcade Fighting Games!Despite the original open-source designs being over a decade old, the Saroo flash cartridge for the Sega Saturn really rose to prominence in the last year or so, and the updates during that period have cemented it as a popular option for Saturn gamers looking for a way to preserve or replace their disc drive. The SEGAGuys have covered Saroo several times on our channel, with a tutorial , update guides , and comparisons of the load times on Sega’s Model 2 ports and SNK’s Neo Geo ports on the console. Having used the Saroo during our Street Fighter The Movie retrospective , I noticed that load times there were much improved. And so, I revisited every Capcom arcade fighting game on the Sega Saturn to compare the load times and performance. It was a journey that covered 21 games across 19 discs from 18 retail releases. These games were all compared across Saroo, the excellent Fenrir ODE and good old fashioned compact disc where available. The results demonstrated that Saroo yields a huge benefit in many cases, greatly reducing load times to the point that many felt non-existent, eclipsing Fenrir and disc load speeds by as much as 10 to 16 seconds in certain scenarios. It wasn’t a perfect victory, though — for some games the advantages were minimal, for one 4MB enhanced game there was no improvement whatsoever between fights, despite the initial boot being faster, and in two games, Saroo demonstrated some compatibility issues. Despite all that, in addition to advantages such as per game save and support for 1MB and 4MB games, Saroo’s improved loading makes the device extremely compelling for fighting game fans. Check out the SEGAGuys video for a full breakdown of every game and to see those differences play out in real time!
