Dragon Ball Beat ‘Em Up Homebrew Gets Progress Update

The Dragon Ball homebrew game that was revealed last month has made more progress, according to an update given by its developer, NaiSan.

NaiSan posted in the SHIRO! Discord server over the weekend about his beat ’em up set in the Dragon Ball universe, saying that he’s made solid progress, including the following accomplishments:

  • Fixed the video player and added the classic Brazilian opening to the game (this will be optional in the future).
  • Updated the HUD and background graphics.
  • Rebuilt the stage using tiles and added a new background layer to enhance depth.
  • Implemented foreground transparency when the player gets too close to the screen.
  • Improved enemy behavior: now, when they take too much damage, they fall and become temporarily invulnerable.
  • Refined the collision system to make it more accurate.

“There’s still a lot to improve — especially performance on real Saturn hardware — and I also plan to add language options for both the intro and the game itself. But development is moving steadily forward!” NaiSan said.

He also posted a video showing off his progress:

He said the game, along with “a few other surprises,” will be showcased at Retrocon 2025 , a convention in São Paulo, Brazil, set for July 25 to 27.

NaiSan is a Brazilian developer and retro YouTuber who’s been working on Dragon Ball since late last year. He’s making the game using  Jo Engine , developed by Johannes Fetz, and the Saturn Graphics Library. He’s also said that his game borrows sprite assets from Dragon Ball: Advanced Adventure, a Game Boy Advance title developed by Dimps and released by various publishers between 2004 and 2006.
