Eadmaster’s Princess Crown Patch Nears Completion With 1.0 Release Candidates

Eadmaster is nearly finished with his English fan translation patch for Saturn action RPG Princess Crown after uploading a pair of “release candidate” patches in the last two weeks, both labeled version 1.0.

The latest version, 1.0 RC2, uploaded Monday, can be downloaded from the project’s GitHub . The patch should be applied to the data track — track 1 — of Princess Crown using the XDelta patcher .

Version 1.0 RC1 was uploaded March 23 to the GitHub, and since SHIRO! last covered the translation patch with version 0.9 in February, there also was a 0.95 release March 10.

As the most recent updates are labeled “release candidate” patches, they are not final releases. But if no further bugs are found by Eadmaster and those helping him, including Mentill and Paul Met, the latest release likely will be considered final.

In addition to a variety of script edits, some of the biggest bugs squashed in the recent updates have been the restoration of dialogue that had been causing soft locks after the dragon fight and the beginning of the Larva fight. There also is a fix for garbled graphics when obtaining the Earth Stone when using Paul Met’s widescreen hack, which Eadmaster distributes separately as an “EX version.”

According to the GitHub, these are all the improvements made in the last few patch updates:

v0.95

  • resized and recentered many doorway signs (with the help of Mentill)
  • fixed Engrish in pre/post-battle screens (contributed by Mentill)
  • script fixes
  • disabled debug mode in EX build
  • added LT patch build
  • some regression bugs were found due to resizing and recentering the doorway signs in February, switch back to v0.9 while they are fixed.

v1.0 RC1

  • better fix for the soft locks after the dragon fight and the beginning of the Larva fight, restored full dialogues in the cutscenes (contributed by Mentill)
  • fixed infinite loading when entering the Notice Drop side-quest tower and Demon Tower/Time Stone cutscene freeze in v0.9.5 (with the help of Mentill)
  • updated widescreen hack to v1.2, fix for garbled graphics while obtaining the Earth stone (EX builds only), removed transparency on Amberstep villagers (contributed by Paul Met)
  • script fixes, removed some unnecessary capitalizations
  • resized and recentered a few more signs

v1.0 RC2

  • fixed bottom padding on the selection dialogs (contributed by Mentill)
  • capitalization and other script fixes

A Japanese Saturn exclusive at its release, Princess Crown was published in December 1997 by Atlus. It was developed by an internal Atlus team that would later break away on their own to form Vanillaware . Sporting Vanillaware’s now-famous two-dimensional storybook art style, Princess Crown follows a teenage royal named Gradriel who journeys across her kingdom to help people and fight villains. While it was later ported to the PSP and PlayStation 4, it’s never been officially translated into English.

Eadmaster first released a Princess Crown translation patch in October last year . He’s working off of a fork of a translation patch made by SamIAm and CyberWarriorX, who made their work publicly available in 2014 to solicit outside help before making it private again sometime after 2020. While he’s legally within his rights to use their work based on the license under which it was uploaded to GitHub, eadmaster did not ask for their blessing to use their translation — nor would they have given it, they told SHIRO! last year.

SamIAm and CyberWarriorX continue to work privately on their Princess Crown translation patch, a project that’s spanned 13 years. Earlier this month, they created a thread on Romhacking.net’s forums to discuss their recent progress, and in October they uploaded a video showing off what they’ve accomplished so far.
