Hang-On GP Community Challenge Done and Dusted

“ Hang-On GP went by in a flash, though something tells me that the tinnitus-like buzz of the motor won’t leave me anytime soon! “

— Gregori Rasputin

The SEGA Saturn SHIRO! March 2025 Hang-On GP Community Challenge skids to a halt! After a total of 155 submissions, nobody is left in doubt who the Leader of the Pack is. Crash , with his trusty Arcade Racer Wheel, smashed the entire competition with significant leading times in almost every category. His overall total time of 1602’380 beat out PandaMonium for the top spot by a whopping 41’520 seconds!

The only other participant taking home a prize in the Hardware-Only Category is yours truly, Double Dime , who managed to steal a victory from Crash by a mere 670 milliseconds on the last weekly challenge at Long New Dwells .

Right at the end of the challenge Sam also joined in the Emulation Category to give Random some company. Random managed to win with a total time of 811’940 for the first three courses. Sam came in second and last place with 900’370.

All winners will receive a custom patch designed by SaturnDave (which is being used as the banner for this article) and embroidered by Moose . Crash will receive an additional special coffee mug prize for coming in first place . FartDaily also will receive a “ Hang-On Helper ” bonus patch prize for figuring out how to perform a wheelie boost start (which doesn’t seem to be known anywhere online) and sharing the information with the community. (To do the wheelie boost start, hold down gas immediately at the start, and release before the first light) .

Crash said he first got into Saturn “ towards the end of 2022, and was able to acquire a Fenrir ODE in the following months. ” Since then he’s “ noticed the community challenges happening and had considered joining one at some point, potentially waiting for something more centered around speedrunning than high scores. ” He’s played a little bit of Hang-On GP prior, doing a “ couple of full game runs, but never really anything serious, and thought this would be a good excuse to change that

For his setup, Crash said, “ I just made the room on my desk and plopped my racing wheel right on top of it, partially obscuring the bottom right of my screen in the process. ” Hang-On GP is the first racing game he’s taken seriously and said he’s “ moderately alright at Crash Team Racing. ” On top of that he generally dislikes grinding out individual level runs and prefers speedrunning full games, funny enough.

“ I fucking love blue skies era SEGA racers.
Cannot emphasize this enough. “
– PandaMonium

“ I find it to be absolutely beautiful!!!
The potential for time save is virtually infinite with the analog movement. “
-FartDaily

“Hang-On GP is why I kept my wheel and I’m glad I did,
because it led to discovering other wheel gems like Touge King
– SEGARPGFAN

“Must confess, I really wasn’t aware of this game.
So yeah, mission accomplished Community Challenge Team!”

– Mampfus

Thanks to all participants and organizers who make this all happen, we hope to see lots of you for the next monthly challenge in May. Until then, Hang-Loose!
