Patch Improves D&D: Tower of Doom Soundtrack with Arcade MusicSaturn gamers enjoying Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom can improve the aural experience with a new patch that replaces the music with higher quality tracks. A fan named Qurt uploaded the patch to SegaXtreme’s Resources section Tuesday. For Windows users, there’s a runnable .BAT file created using the XDelta patcher, which is included with the download. Also included are a .SH file and .COMMAND file for Linux and Mac users, respectively. “This patch replaces all music with the arcade version, which I extracted myself using M1 Bridge to achieve the highest possible quality,” Qurt said on the resource page. “The original soundtrack in [the] Saturn version is very poor quality — full of distortion, artifacts, and lacking low-end frequencies. The overall dynamics of the Saturn tracks are terrible, which is why I decided to create this patch.” Qurt also uploaded a video to YouTube demonstrating the difference in quality between the original Saturn version and their extracted arcade version. Qurt provided these instructions for patching the game in Windows: 1. Extract the Dungeons & Dragons - Tower of Doom (Arcade Music Patch).zip archive 2. Copy your original files into the 'original' folder with their original file names 3. Double click the 2.Apply Patch-Windows.bat file and patching will begin 4. Once patching is complete you will find your newly patched files in the 'output' folder 5. Enjoy!Linux and Mac users can use the instructions in the readme file that’s included with the download. Tower of Doom and Shadow Over Mystara originally were arcade games that came out in 1994 and 1996, respectively. The two games were included in Capcom’s “Dungeons & Dragons Collection,” a March 1999 Saturn compilation that only released in Japan, although a pamphlet distributed by Capcom at E3 1997 insinuated that the company planned to bring it to the West. Qurt got hooked on Tower of Doom when a friend showed him the game on an original CPS2 arcade board a few weeks ago. “Later I tried it on Saturn, and I could immediately feel that the music quality was much worse than in the original arcade version,” Qurt told SHIRO! this morning. At first, he downloaded a supposedly high-quality copy of the arcade version’s soundtrack from the Internet, but something didn’t feel right to him. “So I decided to ‘export’ the music myself directly from the arcade ROM, and only then I was happy with how it turned out,” he said. One sleepless night and some time to test later and the patch was ready to go. As for the other game in the collection, Shadow Over Mystara, an arcade music patch may be in the cards but Qurt hasn’t checked the game yet. ”I just need a week off from this, and I’ll get back to Shadow Over Mystara,” Qurt said. “If it turns out the quality differs significantly from the arcade version, then I’ll make a patch.” This isn’t the first time this year that Tower of Doom has gotten some love from the hacking community. In May, Lirinica finished inserting the official English arcade English translation into the Saturn game. Happily, Lirinica’s translation patch is compatible with Qurt’s arcade music patch. The translation patch only affects the game’s track 1 file — the data track — while the music patch affects all the other tracks. So now English speakers can enjoy Tower of Doom in a way that’s both more readable and sounds better.
