Duke Nukem 3D NetLink Tournament Is Over, Baby!

What started back in August last year, the Worldwide SEGA Saturn SHIRO! 32-person Duke Nukem 3D Saturn NetLink Online Double Elimination Tournament has finally come to an end.

We were already out of bubblegum when the tournament was announced in June last year , and many a kicked ass later we’ve finally reached the conclusion. Yours truly, Double Dime , who was sent to the loser’s bracket by Toast , managed to climb out and get the top spot.

Toast , who didn’t lose once leading up to the last match, came in second place after double elimination in the Grand Finals. Jetset125 got third place for making it to the finals in the loser’s bracket.

*Some swaps and replacements happened due to dropouts or connection issues.

To help speed up the “first to 5 points in best of 3 matches” rule, participants used a hack by Bo Bayles that modifies the game so you never lose points. The patch is now included in the recently updated online patches . It also switches the default control scheme to the 3D Pad, as well as simplifying the “Jevon’s control” code to just pausing the game and pushing up twice, if you want to switch back and forth to D-pad control. This 3D Pad hack also works offline if you select “traditional” mode from the Netlink main menu when booting the game.

This points hack did have issues, however, as explosions from rockets that killed but didn’t make a direct connection wouldn’t count.

Sixteen of the matches were recorded throughout the tournament, including five with side-by-side video action (in order):

The rest of the videos can be found over here in chronological order.

Thanks to all 32 people who participated. The next tournament will be announced on the SHIRO! Show today, with signups starting after the announcement.

Damn… I’m looking good!
